Intro: Thank you, Grandpa
- 27 února, 2024
Just before I’m about to travel somewhere far, for some reason, almost every time and completely automatically and uncontrollably, I start thinking about my hometown, its surroundings, and my family much more than usual. Sure, it could be because I haven’t lived there for years, so I sometimes feel nostalgic, but what’s strange is that these intense thoughts and various coincidences always come before departing somewhere else.
Before my trip to Mexico in January this year, these thoughts and coincidences were certainly not missing from the pre-departure process, quite the opposite. It was amusing when the day before my departure in Prague, on my way to work, stuck in traffic, I saw a company van from a city where I was born with the logo of an international festival that takes place in my hometown right in front of me (my hometown is more than 400km far from Prague). It cheered me up, so I went to the office in a good mood. Anyway, I didn’t yet know that on my way home from work, a Skalka cottage van would be driving in front of me—this time, it wasn’t our mountain cottage in a village close to my hometown, but some cottage here in Bohemia – but still… Pretty cool, isn’t it?
Although these coincidences and thoughts can be strange from time to time, I like them. They always remind me of Josef Tomanek, my grandfather, who not only traveled a lot but mainly lived for years in Australia and had the most interesting life story I’ve ever had the privilege to glimpse into. Besides, my grandpa was most probably the one who managed to instill in me that need to travel. He had such incredible and captivating stories that I heard since I was little. Grandma, a significant historian of the city, probably left me with the desire to document life, so we’ll see how it goes.
I’m glad that I understood not only the importance of traveling but also the importance of remembering and never forgetting where we come from, such a beautiful corner of the world. You taught me a lot of things, and I fondly remember you both.
Thanks, Grandpa, thanks, Grandma.
